Northbrook Barn

The client for this project approached us with the aspiration to convert a commercial storage building on an existing agricultural unit to a winery and associated offices. The client also wanted to be able to sell their product from the site. The scheme was part of a wider farm diversification project.

Given the site’s location in a National Park and its close proximity to designated heritage assets, due consideration was given to both the heritage and landscape impacts when designing the alterations to the building.

The application proposed several alterations to the building to make sure it was fit for the intended use including the insertion of glazing to allow a good level of natural light into the building. The conversion of the building brought an underutilised building into a productive use which would provide support for a prosperous rural economy as well as supporting the existing farm operations on site. The conversion was sensitively designed to a high quality which would be in keeping with its surrounds whilst contributing to the enrichment of the culture and biodiversity of the South Downs National Park.
